Veneers vs. Bonding

Composite bonding is a minimally-invasive, quick and easy way to get the smile you have always dreamed of. It is cost-effective and the process is reversible, they are also great for repairing chips or cracks in the teeth. Porcelain veneers are great for those that would like a more permanent solution, as they last longer and are generally more durable and stain-resistant. Porcelain can also look more natural than composite.

What is a dental veneer and composite bonding?

Dental veneers and dental bonding both cover a tooth or multiple teeth to improve the appearance of your smile. They can change the colour, shape, size and length of a tooth or several teeth. Porcelain veneers are made in the laboratory while composite bonding is done in surgery by the dentist.

What are the advantages & disadvantages of having dental veneers?

Dental veneers can make a big difference to the appearance of your teeth, and your gum tissue will generally respond well to dental veneers.

The colour can be matched to your other teeth and are extraordinarily stain-resistant.

They can change the shape, size, colour and position of your teeth and are the best long term aesthetic option to improve your smile whilst requiring minimal reduction of your existing tooth.

Once you have begun having your tooth prepared for your veneer, it cannot be reversed. If a veneer cracks, it is very difficult to repair without replacing the whole veneer.

Patients with poor gum health are not good candidates for dental veneers, and we will recommend other treatment options. Habits such as chewing your pen or biting your nails are also not compatible with dental veneers as they can crack the veneer.

Also, people who grind or clench their teeth risk chipping or cracking their dental veneers. Lastly, veneers can decay, so you must maintain excellent oral health and pay regular visits to your dentist.

How Long Do They Last

How long do they last and cost?

How Long Do They Last

Like real teeth, it depends on how careful you are with your new veneer. If well looked after and not used to open bags or bottle tops, they should last between 10 - 15 years. However, we cannot provide a specific lifespan for our veneers.

The cost of dental veneers will vary according to the number of teeth you have treated and the condition of your teeth. For more exact pricing book a consultation with one of our practitioners.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to fit dental veneers?

The treatment time varies from patient to patient, depending on how many veneers they have fitted. At Dental House Exeter, our veneers can usually be fitted in two to three treatments.

Who needs dental veneers?

Dental veneers offer patients a natural and durable solution for damaged teeth and can improve the shape and appearance of their mouth and create a better bite.

They are suitable for anyone with relatively good gum health and teeth who wants to disguise discoloured teeth, cover or protect chipped or worn teeth, ease overcrowding or close up any gaps in their teeth.

At Dental House Exeter, we recommend veneers be bonded to the front surface of a patient’s existing teeth to create the appearance of natural teeth, particularly front teeth.

What does dental veneer treatment involve?

In the case of porcelain veneers, which more closely resemble a natural tooth and are more stain-resistant, providing a more durable, long-lasting solution, patients start treatment with a thorough consultation during which an intra-oral scan and X-rays are taken with our dentist.

The dentist will prepare your teeth by removing a thin layer of the tooth and the laboratory then designs the porcelain veneers into a precise shape. Then the veneer will be bonded to the tooth with a small amount of dental adhesive.

Do veneers look like natural teeth?

Veneers that are done properly by an experienced dentist can look very natural and enhance your smile. Veneers are a comfortable fit and preserve a lot of your natural tooth structure while enhancing your smile and providing a long-lasting restoration solution.

Does veneer bonding hurt?

During a veneer preparation you will receive a local anaesthetic. Fortunately, as soon as anaesthesia takes effect, you shouldn’t feel discomfort during the procedure.
